Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Written by Nancy Oliver and directed by Craig Gillespie

“You become an adult when: you decide to do right...and not just for you, but for everybody...even when it hurts.”

Giving insight to the often overwhelming reality of life and love, this bleak Canadian-American romantic drama explores the strange love story between Lars and his artificial girlfriend, Bianca, who is a sex doll. The lonely Lars (Ryan Gossling) has trouble connecting with people on a genuine level, as he shows many signs of undiagnosed autism or a sensory processing disorder.

Lars finds himself feeling the warmth of love with a cold, inanimate sex doll while navigating the dark reality of life, feeling completely alone. While Lars and Bianca’s relationship was met with concern, his family and community overall supports it, showing Lars that he’s not alone, rather lonely and craving real human connection.

Ryan Gossling gives an incredible performance relaying the complicated nature of Lars’ past trauma and the long standing effects left behind.
