"Sometimes I think I’ve felt everything I’m ever gonna feel, and from here on out, I’m not gonna feel anything new … just … lesser versions of what I’ve already felt."
This film follows the story of a lonely and soulful greeting card writer, Theodore Twombly, who is going through the process of getting a divorce. The writer, played by Joaquin Phoenix, finds himself installing an OS (Operating System), which seems to have a personality of its own and becomes a companion to Theodore. The OS, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, introduces herself as Samantha and it seems that she has desires and aspirations of her own.
The audience quickly learns that Theodore has trouble connecting with people in the real world, lacking genuine and deep connections. He seems to play the part of happy, knowing what to say to please others, but is lost when it comes to being alone with himself and feelings. As the film goes further into his backstory, we see his past marriage fall apart due to his constant feeling of insecurity and a feeling of uncontrollable and inconsolable loneliness.
Samantha, the OS, and Theodore begin a romantic relationship, showing Theodore a new side of love, but most importantly, teaching him to love himself.
Joaquin Phoenix gives an outstanding performance, allowing the viewer to connect deeply with his character. I recommend this movie highly.
